Prayer that shocked the nation

Note: I received this story in an email this morning. I'm publishing this here so I can share it with the readership. When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard: "Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, "Woe to those who call evil good", but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot anti-abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem. We have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition. We have pol...

Why Do We Have to Recycle Grocery Bags?

Filipinos never learned it's lesson from the catastrophic Ondoy ! When undas is over, so many garbage were littered in every cemetery here in Metro Manila. As if we didn't know the effect of those non-biodegrable plastic bags to the environment. We've been told about its harmful effect towards the environment countless of times but we Filipinos simply ignore it. The flood brought about by tropical storm Ondoy is supposedly enough to remind us that we must learn from the effect of our action. But while we are still in the process to recover from the catastrophe, again we are back into our habit of disposing garbage especially used plastics irresponsibly. Now, do we really have solution for this? My suggestion is that we should reuse (read: recycle) those plastic bags! Our purpose in using recycled bags is to protect the environment. In doing so, we may be able to reduce the amount of plastic grocery bags that end up in landfills, Laguna Lake, Pasig River, and in the seas....

RP braces as another typhoon hits the country on All Saint's Day

Philippine authorities said Friday they were preparing for the worst as a typhoon was set to hit the nation's capital and nearby areas still reeling from storms that claimed more than 1,100 lives. Four more provinces in southern Luzon and the Bicol region have been placed under Storm Signal No. 3 as typhoon “Santi” accelerates while continuing to zoom in closer to Quezon province, the weather bureau said yesterday (Oct. 30). "Residents in low-lying areas and near mountain slopes under signals #3, #2 and #1 are advised to take all the necessary precautionary measures against flashfloods and landslides," the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said. The weather bureau also warned those living along coastal areas to watch out for storm surges and big waves generated by the typhoon. Brad Pitt's 'floating house' will work here in the Philippines

Hollywood celebrity Brad Pitt and his Make It Right (MIR) Foundation set about building environmentally-friendly and sustainable housing for affected families in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina pummeled the Southwestern coast of the United States in 2006. Make it Right Foundation aims to build over 150 houses within 14 blocks using "green" design principles pitched by architectural firms all over the world. This is supposed to fulfill the promise Pitt made residents in the area: that he would help them build a stronger and safer neighborhood. For the rest of the story, please read from ABS-CBN News here: http://ph.news.yahoo.com/abs/20091019/tph-brad-pitt-s-floating-house-can-work-85c5a6c.html . Meanwhile, we can only hope that typhoon Ramil won't cause much devastation to our country unlike typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.

The Only Hope for the Philippines

by Father James Reuter, S.J. Note: I found this message in my mailbox this morning. This originally came from a Yahoo Group I am presently subscribing. By her own admission, GMA (Gloria Macapagal Arroyo) rightfully assessed that over the last decades; our republic has become one of the weakest, steadily left behind by its more progressive neighbors.' Forty years ago, we were only second to Japan in economic stature, and way ahead of Singapore , Hong Kong , Malaysia , and Thailand . Today, at our present growth rate, it will take us 30 years to get to where Thailand is. A population of 160 Million; Of those, 70 to 90 million (equivalent to our current population) will live below the poverty line; Our national debt is estimated to be at US$200B (compared to US$28B when Marcos fled, and US$53B today); We will be competing, not against Thailand or even Vietnam , but against Bangladesh ; We will be the most corrupt nation in Asia , if not in the world (we're already ranke...

What You Need to Know About Leptospirosis

After the flood brought about by tropical storm Ondoy (international codename Ketsana), the Philippines Department of Health (DOH) recorded 375 confirmed cases of leptospirosis with 28 patients already died from the disease. So, what is this so-called leptospirosis and where does it come from? Leptospirosis (also known as Weil's disease, Weil's syndrome, canicola fever, canefield fever, nanukayami fever, 7-day fever, "Fort Bragg fever," and "Pretibial fever") is a bacterial zoonotic disease caused by spirochaetes of the genus Leptospira that affects humans and a wide range of animals, including mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles. Leptospirosis is transmitted by the urine of an infected animal and is contagious as long as it is still moist. Although rats, mice and voles are important primary hosts, a wide range of other mammals including dogs, deer, rabbits, hedgehogs, cows, sheep, and even certain marine mammals are ...
