Doing Things By Halves

By: Davina deWitts I do things by halves. Sometimes, if I'm lucky I'll get 80% done before I allow myself to get distracted, just stopping short of completion. Just look inside my wardrobe and see the amount of things completed to 80%. Unfinished bags I've started sewing, knitted scarves with the knitting needles still threaded through, unsent postcards that are too old to post, a half assed filing system (the stuff that needs to be filed is in a big fat pile next to the phone). Look inside my email account and see 10 draft copies of letters I've been meaning to send (one is dated back to a year ago), and other countless emails I've left unread with the intention to read and reply. If I do eventually finish something, the pressure has to come from an external source (like a boss (which I don't have at the moment), or an irrevocable deadline). But even then, the journey to completion certainly isn't a pretty one. It's sorta like carrying a whinging child...

Prayer that shocked the nation

Note: I received this story in an email this morning. I'm publishing this here so I can share it with the readership. When Minister Joe Wright was asked to open the new session of the Kansas Senate, everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but this is what they heard: "Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, "Woe to those who call evil good", but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot anti-abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem. We have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition. We have pol...

Why Do We Have to Recycle Grocery Bags?

Filipinos never learned it's lesson from the catastrophic Ondoy ! When undas is over, so many garbage were littered in every cemetery here in Metro Manila. As if we didn't know the effect of those non-biodegrable plastic bags to the environment. We've been told about its harmful effect towards the environment countless of times but we Filipinos simply ignore it. The flood brought about by tropical storm Ondoy is supposedly enough to remind us that we must learn from the effect of our action. But while we are still in the process to recover from the catastrophe, again we are back into our habit of disposing garbage especially used plastics irresponsibly. Now, do we really have solution for this? My suggestion is that we should reuse (read: recycle) those plastic bags! Our purpose in using recycled bags is to protect the environment. In doing so, we may be able to reduce the amount of plastic grocery bags that end up in landfills, Laguna Lake, Pasig River, and in the seas....

32 Words That Can Change Your Life

By: Carina MacInnes We all have ways of testing opportunities that enter our lives. Some of us just dive right in based on feeling, others walk straight into what they know is right by a gut feeling or intuition. And if it's not gut feelings or emotions that are the tests of opportunities, it is the logical mind persuading us to ignore those feelings and emotions and test it with our reality of reason. Most of us do not have a predetermined strategy for testing opportunities, or even more generally to test the actions we take and the choices we make in our lives. There is an easier way to determine if our choices we make and the opportunities we receive 'pass the test'. This simple 32 word statement of business ethics was first created in the 1930s and used to turn around a failing company. These four questions were applied by each employee to each and to every minute detail of the company's workings. This little list of four questions from Rotary International, a huma...
