Why Do We Have to Recycle Grocery Bags?

Filipinos never learned it's lesson from the catastrophic Ondoy! When undas is over, so many garbage were littered in every cemetery here in Metro Manila. As if we didn't know the effect of those non-biodegrable plastic bags to the environment. We've been told about its harmful effect towards the environment countless of times but we Filipinos simply ignore it. The flood brought about by tropical storm Ondoy is supposedly enough to remind us that we must learn from the effect of our action. But while we are still in the process to recover from the catastrophe, again we are back into our habit of disposing garbage especially used plastics irresponsibly. Now, do we really have solution for this?

My suggestion is that we should reuse (read: recycle) those plastic bags! Our purpose in using recycled bags is to protect the environment. In doing so, we may be able to reduce the amount of plastic grocery bags that end up in landfills, Laguna Lake, Pasig River, and in the seas. Plastics do not degrade for years and in effect, this causes problem to all the living organisms big and small that depend on the environment. If our surroundings are filled with plastic pollutants, the result is life and biological degradation - that will be a much bigger catastrophe, more bigger than what bagyong Ondoy did to us. YOu may not want Waterworld to come up next to Metro Manila, do you?

Folks, it's not too late to change our habit. When we go to the grocery store, we should start recycling those grocery bags. Be it in paper or plastic form, we are reducing a large volume of plastic wastes that is sure to harm our environment. More so, we put an aid in the preservation and propagation of biodiversity.

Recycled grocery bags are as much the same as non-recycled bags. Aside from that, recycling grocery bags take less energy in producing them rather than making new ones that uses enormous power and raw materials to produce.
